When I hear the word winter or snow I instantly think of Santa Claus. Sure Santa Claus is a popular name that almost everyone knows and thinks of around Christmas time, but do we really know where this jolly man came from? Most people think that Santa Claus lives in the North Pole with his elves and makes toys. Then on Christmas Eve he comes out and delivers them to all the good children, but there is more to the story than that.
St. Nicholas was said to have died on December 6th between 326 and 341 A.D. The idea of St. Nicholas was then brought to America by Dutch settlers who came to New York. In 1773 and 1774 a New York newspaper reported that Dutch families had gathered to honor the death of St. Nicholas in December. Soon after St. Nicholas evolved into Santa Claus and the man we now know today.
