When someone is asking me what I am going to do for the holidays, I always say I want to build a snowman. Building snowmen actually goes back all the way to the Middle Ages. Did you know that building a snowman was not always for fun and enjoyment? They weren’t always used as the fun “Frosty The Snowman” we all know today. Snowmen were once used to help us release our anger.
After the Middle Age, the idea of the snowman grew. In the Victorian era, snowmen were becoming a part of the Christmas tradition. The best example of how snowmen became part of the Christmas tradition is “Frosty The Snowman”. The song was created during the Christmas of 1950. The song was created to help spread good spirit and cheer. The reason why the idea of the snowman relates to Christmas is because of “Frosty The Snowman”.
Still today, snowmen do not look the same all around the world. For example, In Japan, their snowmen are made with only two snowballs. The small one goes on top of the big one. The weird thing is that their snowmen do not have arms! They are meant to resemble the daruma doll, which brings good luck.
Now that you know the history behind the snowman, the next time you build one you can remember what they were really used for and how snowmen look differently all around the world!
